Transmit Zone Tip
On all ultrasound systems, a sonographer has the option to use multiple transmit or focal zones. This appears as multiple “<” along the vertical scale of an image and allow a system to electronically focus in several areas, improving image quality. An issue is created by this in the form of horizontal bands in the image which vary in intensity but always appear halfway between two focal zones. If you get a service call reporting horizontal artifacts in an image, ask the customer if they are using multiple focal or transmit zones. If so, ask them to revert to a single zone. If the issue disappears, then the system is not malfunctioning as these artifacts are normal under these conditions.
